A "notary public" is a person authorized by the government of Ontario to witness the signing of documents and administer oaths and declarations. A notary public has all the powers of a commissioner for taking affidavits, can witness or certify, and attest, the execution of a document, and certify and attest documents to be true copies of an original.
For further information, see the Law Society Ontario (LSO) website and the Notaries Act, the legislation which governs the notarising of documents in Ontario.

Virtual notarization had been permitted for a period of time during the pandemic, by regulation made under the Notaries Act , this regulation has been changed, and no such regulation has been made.
